Mark Smith is founder and artistic director for the all-male dance company, Deaf Men Dancing (DMD).

DMD is a collaboration of professional male dancers who, like Mark, are deaf. They've created and developed a fusion of different styles of dance with sign-language incorporated into choreography creating a unique, interesting and original aesthetic.

DMD have performed at Dance East’s 1st Anniversary Gala, E4’s ‘Battlefront’, London 2012's Deaf Day, DaDa Disability & Deaf Arts' 'Hands-On' and Candoco's 20th Anniversary Cabaret. DMD have performed and toured Sense of Freedom at The Place, DaDa South’s Showcase at the Brighton Festival, New Wolsey's Pulse Festival, City Lit's Deaf Day, Cloud Dance Festival and Clin de'Oeil Deaf Arts Festival in France.

In the outdoor arts arena, DMD was commissioned by Greenwich + Dockland International Festival and Without Walls to create and performed Alive! (a collaboration with visual artist Rachel Gadsden) and TEN. DMD were delighted to be invited by Sadler’s Wells to perform Hear! Hear!& Rosa at their =dance season and The Soundman at Equation showcase. Rosa was the first time a female deaf dancer performed with DMD. Through this, Mark set up a new company called DMD+
